Guide and Virtual Tour of The Lake District: Yew Tree Tarn.
Panorama | Review | Map
Yew Tree tarn is a tiny lake, next to the road on your way from
Ambleside over to Coniston. Its easy to miss but is a pretty, quiet gem. The woods here were deliciously damp and dark on an autumn afternoon, but can be an inviting, sun-filled glade in late Spring. The walking aroud here is fantastic - Coniston fells up to your west, Tarn Hows to the east and Langdale fells just along the road.
The 'wall' across the tarn is in fact a dam, built in the 1930s, when the landowner stocked it with trout. It is now a fishing spot for the Coniston and Torver Angling Association.
