White Moss is a lovely spot for a picnic by the river and has extensive parking facilities. The bus from Ambleside to Grasmere stops here too.
A short walk from the car park is a large, flat grassy area next to the river - ideal for paddling, picnics and playing. A family of particularly aggressive, hungry swans also live here so watch out - they will think nothing of scaring you off your sandwiches and terrifying your dogs and toddlers!
If you cross the footbridge over the river, you can walk through the woods to be rewarded with a much larger stretch of water to play in - Rydal Water and Grasmere lakes. Or have a stroll along the footpath above Rydal Water to visit the huge cave above the lake.
