Guide and Virtual Tour of The Lake District: Loughrigg Terrace.
Panorama | Review | Map
Loughrigg Fell lies to the west of the twin lakes of Rydal and Grasmere and is a popular spot with visitors to the Lake Distict, being easily accessible from Ambleside. There are lovely spots for a picnic by the river at White Moss and extensive parking areas. You can paddle here too - but watch out for the swans - they are used to being treated to visitors' picnics and can get quite nasty.
There is a whole maze of footpaths on Loughrigg, which is a blessing and also a problem: this relatively low fell and its ease of accessibility make it an appealing place for visitors to the Lake District, however, they can be fooled into believing that Loughrigg is harmelss and easy walking. The Mountain Rescue Team at Ambleside carry out more rescues here than any other fell for just that reason.
Walkers are often badly prepared, wearing unsuitable clothing and footwear and can quickly get lost in the mist. So we would advse that you treat this begiulingly lovely fell with respect!
For those wishing to take a less taxing stroll, on flatter ground, you can walk around the west shore of Rydal and visit the huge cave, or walk to the village Grasmere from White Moss.
