Guide and Virtual Tour of The Lake District: Honister Pass.
Panorama | Review | Map
Honister Pass is the name of the mountain pass which links Buttermere with the Borrowdale valley. The B5289 road winds up and down to this pass, with gradients of up to 1:4 and reaching an altitude of 1,167 feet (365metres).
At the summit, you can find the Honister Hause Youth Hostel and the Honister Slate Mine - featured in a BBC 4TV programme, 'Tales from The National Parks'. This is now a popular visitor attraction, where you can not only visit the mine and buy slate products, but also walk on England's first Via Ferrata! (Great views from here).
The area around Honister is less busy than many parts of the Lake District. There's a pleasant circular drive from here, which goes to Keswick, by way of the Newlands valley, Buttermere and Crummock Water, although you may not get out of 3rd gear for very much of it...
