Guide and Virtual Tour of The Lake District: Crummock Water.
Panorama | Review | Map
Buttermere, Crummock Water and Loweswater form a triplet of lakes on the quieter, western edges of the Lake District. Further from the easy access roads of eastern Cumbria, this area is a gem, being considerably less developed and distorted by tourism. Red squirrels live in the coniferous forests in this area.
Crummock Water is the largest lake of the three. The road here passes right next to its shore line. Buttermere itself sits in a narrow valley, surrounded by some fantastic high level walks. The bus service here is a small minibus, 'The Honister Rambler' which is very useful for those staying here to access the surrounding area.
Loweswater is the smallest of the three lakes and is unusual in that it drain towards the centre of the Lake District, not away from it.
