photograph of Buttermere and LoweswaterThese two lakes form a triplet with the lake of Crummock Water in the same valley and are on the quieter, western fringes of the Lake District. They can be reached from the east over Honister Pass or from the south, by travelling up the western coast of Cumbria. The lakes are separated by a narrow strip of meadowland and surrounded by dramatic peaks.

This is great spot for serious walkers and climbers. The mountains of Haystacks and Fleetwith Pike tower above the valley. One of the more famous, slightly easier walks in the area is to Scale Force, a waterfall, which plunges free fall for nearly 100 feet. There are plenty of different types of accommodation here - from campsites to hotels and guest houses and you won't be cheek-by-jowl with quite so many other visitors here.
