Guide and Virtual Tour of The Lake District: Bowness on Windermere.
Panorama | Review | Map
If you are travelling from the south and east to visit the Lake District, then Bowness may well be your first stop. This bustling little town is many visitors' first glimpse of the Lake District and many are happy to stop here and go no further.
The views across the lake (Windermere) are magnificent and you can take a boat trip from here. There are rowing boats to hire, if you want to power yourself, or the famous Lake District steamers which travel up and down the Lake, stopping at Ambleside at the north of Windermere and Lakeside in the south, as well as many points in between.
Bowness also has a huge range of cafes, pubs, restaurants and gift shops, as well as hotels, guest houses and self-catering accommodation. It can get extremely busy in the summer, especially at weekends and traffic does get rather snarled up. There is a huge park here, close to the lake and plenty of spots to just sit and admire the beauty.
